Fishery Policy and Legislation
The Fishery Management program develops, evaluates, and implements fishery policy and legislation. It ensures that the policy and legislation are supported by required analyses, and are compliant with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and other applicable law.

NMFS publishes the Status of U.S. Fisheries Report to Congress annually. That report, the Fish Stock Sustainability Index, and quarterly updates, are found here.

Social and Economic Impact Analyses
The Sustainable Fisheries Division regional administrator assists with the analysis of social impacts associated with proposed fishery management programs. The agency’s guidance for this analysis is found below.

EEZ |
Exclusive Economic Zone – federal waters extending from the limit of state, territorial, commonwealth or possession waters (generally 3 nautical miles from shore, or the shoreline) out to 200 nautical miles from shore, or to the limit of the EEZ of adjacent states, territories, or nations. |
FMP |
Fishery Management Plan – a plan developed by the Western Pacific Fishery Management Council to manage federal fisheries in the EEZs of the western Pacific region. The FMP, when approved by the Secretary of Commerce, becomes the basis of federal regulations that are used for operational management of the fishery. |
