WESTERN PACIFIC FISHERIES

Annual Catch Limits & Accountability Measures
  • March 13, 2013. Final Catch Limit Specifications. NMFS specifies annual catch limits for western Pacific bottomfish, crustacean, precious coral, and coral reef ecosystem fisheries, and accountability measures to correct or mitigate any overages of catch limits. The catch limits and accountability measures support the long-term sustainability of fishery resources of the U.S. Pacific Islands. The limits are effective April 12, 2013.     • August 7, 2013. Final Specification. Correcting amendment. This document makes a technical correction to the final 2013 annual catch limit specifications for Hawaii non-Deep 7 bottomfish published in the Federal Register on March 13, 2013. View the Federal Register notice here.

Pelagic Fisheries

  • October 2012. Final Rule. Revised leatherback and North Pacific loggerhead sea turtle interaction limits in the Hawaii shallow-set (swordfish) longline fishery. The new limits are effective November 5, 2012. View the Federal Register notice and supporting documentation here.

Marine National Monuments

  • June 3, 2013. Final Rule. NMFS establishes requirements for fishing in the Marianas Trench, Pacific Remote Islands, and Rose Atoll Marine National Monuments. View the rule and supporting documentation here.
  • July 2, 2013. Final Rule. NMFS announces approval by the Office of Management and Budget of collection-of-information requirements for fishing in three marine national monuments. This rule is effective August 1, 2013.  View the rule and supporting documentation here.

Precious Coral Fisheries

  • May 29, 2013. Final Rule. This final rule extends the region-wide moratorium on the harvest of gold corals in the U.S. Pacific Islands through June 30, 2018. NMFS intends this final rule to prevent overfishing and to stimulate research on gold corals. This rule is effective June 28, 2013, through June 30, 2018. View the notice here.

Hawaii Crustacean Fisheries

  • February 8, 2013. 2013 Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Lobster Harvest Guideline. NMFS establishes the annual harvest guideline for the commercial lobster fishery in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) for calendar year 2013 at zero lobsters. View the Federal Register notice here.

  • August 12, 2013. Notice of Agency Decision. Approval of a marine conservation plan for the Pacific remote island areas. NMFS announces approval of a marine conservation plan for Pacific Insular Areas other than American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands, effective from August 1, 2013, through July 31, 2016. INTERNATIONAL FISHERIES

  • September 23, 2013. Final Rule. Bigeye tuna catch limit in longline fisheries for 2013 and 2014. NMFS issues regulations under authority of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Convention Implementation Act to establish a catch limit of 3,763 mt of bigeye tuna for vessels in the U.S. pelagic longline fisheries operating in the western and central Pacific Ocean for each of the calendar years 2013 and 2014. The limit does not apply to vessels in the longline fisheries of American Samoa, Guam, or the Northern Mariana Islands. Once the limit of 3,763 mt is reached in 2013 or 2014, retaining, transshipping, or landing bigeye tuna caught in the area of application of the Convention on the Conservation and Management of Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean will be prohibited for the remainder of the calendar year, with certain exceptions. This rule is necessary for the United States to satisfy its international fishery management obligations. The rule is effective October 23, 2013.
