The permits program processes and issues Federal fishing permits and related certificates authorized under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. Fishing permits and other certifications are required under western Pacific fishery management plans for the following fisheries: pelagic longline, troll and handline, bottomfish, crustaceans, precious corals, and coral reef ecosystem.
The permits program also issues Marine Mammal Authorization Program Certificates for Hawaii longliners, and High Seas Fishing Compliance Act permits for the Pacific Islands region for U.S. fishing vessels fishing in international waters.
For more information, please contact the Pacific Islands Regional Office at (808) 944-2200 and ask for the Permits Program. Additional information about fishery requirements and prohibitions can be found in the regulations, Federal Register notices, and small business compliance guides.
