In 2005, the NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) was established within the National Ocean Service's Office of Response and Restoration. In Hawaii, the MDP works cooperatively with various NOAA offices, as well as other marine debris partners, to help protect Hawaii’s environment and address the problem of marine debris. This program supports community groups, schools, fishing/diving clubs, and anyone else coordinating beach clean-ups by providing information on marine debris in Hawaii (also data collection methodology and sheets), as well as information for the disposal of trash after the event. There are also two grants available to help with special projects! For more information, contact Carey Morishige, Outreach Coordinator for the Marine Debris Program at 808-397-2651, x256 or by email.
