Current Management Issues

On June 25 and August 13, 2012, two petitions list the Northeastern Pacific (NEP) population of great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) as either endangered or threatened under the ESA were received from WildEarth Guardians and jointly from Oceana, Center for Biological Diversity, and Shark Stewards, respectively.

On July 3, 2013, NOAA Fisheries announced a not warranted 12-month finding (78 FR 40104), determining that although the NEP white shark population is a distinct population segment (DPS), it does not warrant listing as a threatened or endangered species at this time.
