Our beginnings as America's first science agency...
When the nation was new, Thomas Jefferson established the first federal science agency - Survey of the Coast, to support safe maritime commerce. The agency was responsible for surveying the coastline and sea floor and creating nautical charts for safe navigation.
In 2007, NOAA celebrates 200 years of science, service, and stewardship... expanding Jefferson's vision into a realm of unimagined possibilities. Today's NOAA is a federal agency touching the lives of Americans in many ways... every single day.
Help NOAA in Hawaii and the Pacific celebrate our 200th by attending one or more of our events throughout the year.
