Scientists and Fishermen Exchange (SAFE)

History of SAFE- SAFE was developed by NOAA’s Oregon Sea Grant Program in 2002 and still continues to be a power resource today. It is a process used to develop relationships and trust among fisheries stakeholders throughout the state. Since its conception, SAFE has assisted Oregon’s stakeholders to find common ground on issues, develop partnerships, avoid and solve large problems and develop a more collaborative approach ocean research. SAFE’s success in Oregon has inspired Hawaii to initiate its own program.

The mission of SAFE is to provide a safe and comfortable environment where genuine exchange of information improves communication and collaboration, builds positive relationships, encourages understanding, and fosters respect and trust among scientists, managers and fishermen.
